Why Not is a Sexual Risk Avoidance education program that is presented in the health classes of the intermediate, middle, and high schools in Washington County. Our main goal is to provide information to help students avoid the risks associated with sex/sexual activity outside of marriage. We also emphasize that they are valuable and worthy of respect and love.

“Our mission is to educate and equip students in regards to their sexuality using a holistic approach with medical accuracy, empowering them to choose abstinence or renew their abstinence until marriage to maintain optimal health.”

Why Not began in 2008 presenting in just one health class. Through the years, the program has developed and grown, now reaching thousands of students every school year.

Through interaction and following the Utah Health Education Standards, we teach young people that the choices they make today have a lasting effect on their future.

“The choices we make today direct the results of our tomorrow.”

Why Not challenges students to consider abstaining from all unhealthy behaviors, including choices related to sexual activity. We encourage them to save all sexual activity for marriage as the healthiest option and give them tools to make that achievable. We explain how anyone can renew their abstinence and make a new choice to stop engaging in sexual activity, eliminating the risks associated with sex/sexual activity outside of a marriage relationship.

We also define terms on sexual abuse, show the importance of respecting consent, and give tools toward healing from trauma, emphasizing that it is never the victim’s fault. We encourage practicing maturity and character and display how our choices can affect our future. We teach how to have healthy relationships, show the importance of setting boundaries, and help students understand how to use refusal skills.

We hope that students remember,

“Your worth is not up for negotiation.”
